My daily exercise routine

Updated: Dec 7, 2024

It took several years for me to develop a comfortable, trouble-free sequence for doing all my aerobic and other various exercises.

In the beginning I did pushups first. I did it without any warmup or any other kind of activity. Sometimes right after I got out of bed in the morning. I had the idea that I would do pushups first and get it out of the way because it was a huff and puff activity, and more strenuous.

But guess what happened! Over several years I had several different kinds of shoulder and arm problems, some serious enough I couldn’t do pushups for a few weeks. Then it was a long process to get myself repaired so I could continue with exercises. By the way, I can usually figure out how to do my own repair work. Most of the time it’s just rest for a while.

I finally figured out that I should get my body warmed up first, by doing something less strenuous than pushups but something that got my heart working, blood flowing, and my body generally warm and loose, ready for the rest of the exercises.

The only thing I had that could do this was the elliptical. It got my heart rate elevated and kept my shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and feet free from joint stress. It’s a low impact exercise and gives a full body workout. When I’m finished, I’m warmed up and ready for the other more specific exercises.

I carried this in my wallet for over 30 years, it's old and worn. I read it once in a while. Its now beside my desk on a bulletin board.
